Analyst Predicts Sony Ahead In ‘11
Earlier this week financial technology analyst company, the Yankee Group, sent out a press release foreseeing Sony triumphing over the 360 and Wii in 2011.
The release goes on the speculate on how many each company will actually sell by that point with the PS3 at 30 million units and 44% market share, the 360 at 27 million units and 40% market share, and Nintendos' Wii trailing with 11 million units and 16% market share.
"With a growing installed base of connected consoles, content owners are beginning to recognize the potential video game consoles offer as a distribution channel," said Michael Goodman, Yankee Group Media & Entertainment Strategies Senior Analyst. "Additionally, these platforms will serve as a strong medium for advertising, validating the growing market for in-game and around game advertising."
Overall, the release states, there will be fewer consoles sold due to the higher price points and that Microsoft will begin lowering the price of the 360 as early as next spring.
They base these predictions on "previous console generation along with price points, actual hands-on gameplay with the consoles and assumptions about the game audience" and conclude that Sony brand loyalty will give them the edge.
And this guy gets paid to make assumptions about what I like and get "actual hand's on gameplay." A real Carnac this guy is. But come on, bro. When faced with the decision of a $600 dvd player and a $200 machine that you can control Mario with by flailing your arms at, which do you think people will go for first?
Apparently not the Wii. Or at least that's the opinion of Goodman who in an a subsequent interview with gamer site FiringSquad.com says that he believes that people will get too tired from using the Wii controller.
"Echoing what Microsoft's hardware production manager Rob Walker said at Gamefest earlier this week, Goodman told us that he and others who have played with the Wii controller for an extended period of time got tired and fatigued. While Goodman feels that the Wii controller is an impressive engineering achievement, he feels that gamers will get frustrated and tired of having to move their arms while, say, swinging a bat while playing Wii Sports or throwing a football in the Wii port of Madden."
I have not seen Mr. Goodman but if I were a betting man, which I am, I would say he probably doesn't get to the gym too often. The day people are too fat and lazy to play a video game is the day i'm hanging it up. I mean is playing Wii Sports or Madden any more tiring than playing actual sports? No, i'd say not. Yet, despite the effort it takes to swing a bat or throw a football, millions of people, in and out of shape, still seem to enjoy doing it every day. BECAUSE IT IS FUN. And I believe the same will hold true with the Wii this fall. BECAUSE IT IS FUN.
Though envisioning Sony's ultimate victory five years from now is not such a stretch. But neither is envisioning flying cars, woolly mammoths again roaming the earth and me being crowned Ultimate Macho King of the Universe. Those are my predictions based on my assumptions. I'll send my press release out on Monday.
