ULTIMATE GHOSTS N’ GOBLINS

ULTIMATE GHOSTS N’ GOBLINS
Capcom, PSP $39.99
Few games boiled my blood back in the ’80s like Ghosts N’ Goblins (in particular, that flying red bastard with the shit-eating grin). Whether or not you made it through the graveyard without turning into a bonepile, you likely have painfully fond memories of the game. Ultimate Ghosts N’ Goblins allows you to relive all of the old-school masochism–it’s a faithful sequel that remains rooted in 2-D perfection/hell. Thankfully, the creators opted not to capitalize on nostalgia, instead creating an eye-popping all-new game that requires true skill. The game engine breathes vibrant life into the beloved Sir Arthur and his host of horrors with flashy 3-D effects that create a fresh experience in beautiful frustration. Other welcome changes include the ability to use shields as well as power up your arsenal, which consists of lances, firebombs, and a thorn-laden whip. Also new to the game is the ability to grab onto the sides of cliffs, dash, and even fly. Where the hell was that in 1987? Non-linear paths offer multiple routes, and warp points allow you to relive past miseries. Ultimate Ghosts N’ Goblins is challenging and not for the dextrously challenged, though the difficulty level is adjustable. For those with enough brass inside their heart-covered boxers, Ultimate Ghosts N’ Goblins is one of the most rewarding titles to hit any system this year. Ryan Rayhill
