Some videogames have so much shit crowding the screen–meters, bars, maps, numbers–it’s like sitting cross-eyed through a PowerPoint presentation. But the magical power of the Xbox360 does away with all that, which is what makes the boxing game Fight Night Round 3 king of the ring. If you want to see how much health you’ve got left, all you have to do is check out your boxer’s mug. Keep throwing right hooks, and you’ll see the left side of your opponent’s face turn to mush. Notice the impact of each landed punch and the way it slowly and steadily fucks up Foreman’s grill. Boxers including Raging Bull Lamotta, Ali, and Frazier have all been studied in depth, and their avatars react just like each specific fighter would: Foreman has got the mummy-style blocks and a rumble with resilient Arturo Gatti will make you think his head is made from cinderblock. I’m more of a lover than a fighter, but it’s so fun to pulverize people in this game that even Gandhi would be lining up to participate. Fight Night Round 3’s totally rad graphics and gameplay make it one of the best 360 games out there by far… and there’s nothing like turning Oscar De La Hoya all fugly–rethink that singing career, pretty boy!
